We spent all day on July 10 docked in the harbor at Halifax, Nova Scotia while the Queen Mary 2 was in port celebrating Cunard's 175th anniversary. You can see a lot more from the water than you can on land. For one thing, you can't visit Georges Island National Historic Site any other way than by sea. The small drumlin located in the middle of Halifax Harbor features a lighthouse with a lighthouse keeper's cottage. It was closed down and abandoned several decades ago, lending a mysterious atmosphere to the island, especially at night when the lights go on. We were fortunate enough to stick around out in the harbor after dark to witness the 21 gun salute from the Citadel put on for Cunard's 175 anniversary celebration. So we even got to see the elusive lighthouse by night all lighted up. Unforgettable.
