Bear update: The Bear says we will have a Big Word Contest Party. TR says, “The more riches, the more I control the pirates.” Moose say, “Those are just fake pearls, Bear!” Lou says we will have a Fake Pearls Party. We will serve Pearly Foods.
We woke up to sun. Will it last? No, it grew cloudy. There was a thunderstorm in the middle of the afternoon. We watched them in the parking lot of the motel. The temperature in Las Cruces climbed to 92.
Tucson 99/75 Brooklyn 81/70
We woke up at 7:30AM. We got dressed and took the pets out for a walk in the parking lot. We got CP in the lobby and brought it back to the room for a change. It was another crowded breakfast buffet. I had to tell the people at the front desk to fetch boiling water for the coffee and hot tea. We checked out of room 114 at 10:08AM. Kenny couldn’t find his sunglass clips. The first pit stop was at exit 0 in Anthony, Texas at the Loves. Gary got gas. I went to the ATM. We immediately entered New Mexico. There was even a Welcome Center, but we didn’t stop there. We saw a billboard for “The Thing” in Arizona. There was construction that narrowed things down to one lane. Pecan groves lined both sides of the road. It was green. There was a junction for I-25 in one and one half miles. Avenida de Mesilla was in three and one half miles. Las Cruces was the next four exits. We got off at exit 140 and proceeded immediately to Applebees. Kenny wanted to go to Pic Quik first. We bought a flat of water, a decorating magazine Ventanas, and went to the ATM for the second time today. I promised myself in June that when we came back this way we would buy that magazine. We showed up at Applebees for lunch. We had club sandwiches. I had to convince them not to grill or fry it. Then we drove to the Plaza. We started to take the pets for a walk, but it was too hot and sunny and we couldn’t access our usual parking in front of the cathedral. We picked up ear wash for the dog at the Pet Barn. We checked into room 129 at the La Quinta, the last La Quinta of the trip. We spent the remainder of the afternoon in the room. A thunderstorm pelted down rain. We tried to go back to the car to empty out the water dish and jug when it wasn’t raining. We weren’t too successful. Shortly after 4:30 we went to dinner at Applebees. I ordered steak. Gary ordered fish and chips. Kenny and the dog got chicken. We tried to call my parents. They weren’t there. We left a message. Kenny and I walked back while Gary drove the car. We fed the dog and cat and took them out. Gary made reservations on the phone at the Holiday Inn in Deming. I ordered the Dyson and Griot’s Garage car cleaner from Amazon.com.
Kenny says that when he entered Las Cruces last September he turned 30,000 miles. Just coming into Las Cruces today he turned 42,000. It’s just about one year. That’s the most mileage he’s ever put on in one year.
Can’t You Even Keep The Water Boiling? Breakfast At La Quinta Bartlett in El Paso 8/26/12
This morning we headed for the breakfast bar in the lobby. It was crowded and noisy with a blaring big screen TV as usual. We could endure that, but what I couldn’t put up with was the lack of boiling water for either the hot tea or even the coffee. Somebody had obviously heated it up at 6:00AM and just left it that way. We were there at 8:00AM. By then it had cooled considerably. I complained at the front desk. There wasn’t even a breakfast bar attendant. As soon as I got the lady to heat up the water, a huge line formed to take advantage of it. I might as well have volunteered to do it myself.

Postcard:
We drove from El Paso to Las Cruces. After a week of traveling we finally escaped from Texas at Anthony exit 0 and crossed the border into New Mexico. Now we’re back to more familiar territory where we were only last September. We are ow only 272 miles from our driveway (437 km).
Dog/Cat Report:
The dog balked at going out on the Mesilla Plaza for a walk. It was too hot. He got lunch and dinner from Applebees.
The cat likes to sit in his stroller to indicate he wants to go out. He’s engaging in wall jumping to practice whacking insects. He liked to lick the dog’s chicken and french fries. I think he likes the salt.
Still no contract . . .
