Late in the evening we were preparing to go to bed. I was reading aloud what I'd written that day. I'm editing a version of Dark 3, a YA mystery novel, that will incorporate much material from my recent trip. I got to the part where Bianca was saying, "Don't shoot! Put that gun down." I said it with expression and continued to read through the mystery material. About ten minutes later there was a knock at the door of our room at La Quinta Sulphur Springs, Texas. We couldn't imagine who it was at such a late hour. Believe it or not it was two local Texas police officers who had been called by the manager of the hotel. They told us that the manager of the hotel wanted us out of there for what seemed no reason at all. I argued with the policemen about freedom of speech and my writing. One of those Texans said, "You sound like a debater." We ended up at another motel for the night. I've been to hundreds of hotels. I've never had such a bizarre experience. You wonder what their motivation is. They didn’t refund our money. I saw other people waiting to check in at thel late hour. It crossed my mind that they are looking for any excuse to sell the same room twice and rob you blind.
