Not one other guest at the Hotel Zur Linde on the outskirts of Hamburg seemed to be an American. All the others appeared to be Germans on vacation trips with their families and dogs who were catered to in the breakfast room by the staff. They gave the dogs water. There were no lifts. Even little girls struggled with their suitcases on the stairs. Hardly a word of English was spoken. No one had heard of A/C. Down in the basement they featured a display from the recent history of Germany, showing maps from the 1930’s —- a display not designed for average American tourists.
