Last summer during our 10-day driving tour of Germany and Austria our first over-night stop was in Potsdam near the Sanssouci Palace. So I was thrilled to discover a spy novel about the time of Frederick the Great of Prussia who built the place. The author has gone to a lot of trouble to imagine what it would be like to be an Austrian spy sent to assassinate Frederick. The novel has many escape and chase scenes where the protagonist is trying to elude capture. You, the reader, feel as if you are there. Sometimes it’s so suspenseful that you are glad you can escape back to the twenty-first century and be “just a tourist” again.
